Seems like the days are starting to normalize and by normalize I don;t mean back to where they were but we are getting into a routine with an end goal in mind. Full Recovery - Never a Doubt.
I had the pleaseure of taking Allie out for the day yesterday, flea market (5 minutes), store (5 minutes), lunch and then home. Somethimes things overwhelm her and she wants to be there but can't take all of the sounds, sights or smells - yesterday at the flea market it was the smell of cigarettes that got to her and at the store maybe incense of whatever the smell was.
Things seem to be coming along and we are grateful every moment. Still a long way to go but one day at a time.
Our hearts go out to everyone fighting the fight. Thank you all for checking on us and loving us the way you do.
Sunday and we still have therapies to go to, so another day closer to the goal.
God Bless

Sights, bright lights, certain sounds, especially smells--all these things really affected Harvest after his stroke. The flourescent lights in the grocery store were one of the worst culprits. It can be so frustrating and confusing for a parent to figure out what is behind the aversion to so many things. It's just important, as you certainly seem to be doing, to realize that these situations are not only mentally, but physically painful for Allie. Occupation therapy has been instrumental in helping Harvest to sensitize appropriately. It's imperative that the occupational therapist slowly sensitize Allie, not try to desensitize her. I don't know if you have checked out Free Rein in our area, but it is a hippotherapy program that incoporates PT,OT, and guided horseback riding. This therapy has been the most effective for Harvest, as he was so guarded from sensory intergration disorder after his stroke, that he would not let anyone except me touch him. It was ludicrous for a stranger to try and get him to balance on a plastic ball, when he wouldn't let them touch him. The horses seem to have a magical effect on some people and enhance self esteem at the same time. If you would like any more information, please feel free to email or call me. Shana Cloer
Dear Steve, Nancy, Allie and Matt,
Glad to hear you feel that things are starting to normalize in terms of your routine. Allie, there's so much for you to process at a flea market and then a store - it's wonderful that you decided to go and by leaving when you had enough shows that you are listening to your body and doing what's right for you. Good for you. Thanks for all you've given me.
Always in our thoughts and prayers.
Much Love,
Clare and Kim
